The DKW Cup Returns to the Province

On Thursday 26th February 2026, four bold Companions, hailing from the far‑flung strongholds of Ridings Tablers, Technical, and Kingston Chapters, assembled as true Juno Brethren, united in purpose and bound by brotherhood. Their mission: a daring expedition across the Province into the rugged realm of West Yorkshire. Their destination: the storied halls of Greenhead Masonic Hall, Huddersfield, home of Universities Chapter Yorkshire No. 4047.

Their prize: the illustrious and hotly contested DKW Loving Cup.

The DKW Cup was presented to the Universities Scheme by RW Bro. David Kenneth Williamson, PAGM, Founder President of the Scheme, upon his retirement at the Scheme Conference held in 2015. Its purpose is simple yet profound: to encourage inter‑visiting between Universities Scheme Lodges and to promote fraternity, connection, and togetherness across the Scheme. Since its introduction, the Cup has become a cherished symbol of unity within the Universities Scheme, travelling from lodge to lodge, strengthening bonds, and reminding Companions everywhere that brotherhood thrives when we visit, share, and learn from one another.

Armed with courage, wit, and just enough coffee to power a crusade, the fellowship set forth: W. Bros James Steele and Ash Vesali, and Bros Tim Roberts and Dave Emerton, a dream team by any measure. Spirits high and fellowship strong, they travelled west not simply to visit a thriving Royal Arch Chapter, but to bring the Cup home.

Arriving with time to spare, still buzzing from anticipation (and possibly the coffee and travel sweets, who’s to say), the Companions crossed the threshold of Greenhead Masonic Hall where the evening’s first guardian appeared: E. Comp Tim Brooksbank, PGStB, APGP. A seasoned traveller of the Province, friend to many, and renowned drinking companion of our ranks through Phoenix Lodge No. 9963, he greeted us with his characteristic grin and easy warmth. His presence alone was enough to reassure even the most battle‑worn of pilgrims.

Between laughs and handshakes, Tim revealed that due to unfortunate circumstances the planned demonstration of an exaltation ceremony had been withdrawn, as the MEZ, E. Comp Joshua J. Mitchell, was unexpectedly absent. E. Comp Nnaemeka Ezeugo stepped up to preside in his stead.

Following the election of the Chapter’s officers for the ensuing year, one of the evening’s highlights unfolded: a last‑minute but masterfully delivered Mystical Lecture by E. Comp Brooksbank. Informative, engaging, and excellently received, the lecture reinforced the Chapter’s commitment to ritual excellence, particularly important as part of the UGLE Universities Scheme, supporting newer Companions in understanding the beauty and depth of the Royal Arch.

A defining moment followed as Comp Thomas Cole received his Grand Chapter Certificates, presented by none other than his father, E. Comp Robert Cole, Deputy Grand Superintendent. A proud moment for father and son alike, and a touching reminder of the generational bonds that give our Order its enduring strength.

The Chapter was then closed in due and ancient form, and the Companions retired for drinks, conversation, and a superb festive board. A delicious three‑course meal of garlic mushrooms, chicken and leek pie, and treacle sponge with custard was enjoyed by all. On this occasion, W. Bro Vesali demonstrated remarkable restraint by only having two mains.

During the toasts, an engaging presentation was given on the tradition of the Loving Cup, tracing its roots to the Livery Companies of the City of London and possibly as far back as Saxon times. We then partook in the ceremony itself, passing the Cup around the table in its intriguing and ancient fashion. When all was complete, the DKW Cup was officially claimed for Juno Lodge, met with enthusiastic applause.

The night continued with lively conversations and warm fellowship with the Companions of Universities Chapter. Their hospitality, humour, and genuine welcome created an atmosphere rich with camaraderie. Many expressed a keen desire to visit Juno Lodge in the near future.

The DKW Cup, now proudly in the hands of Juno Lodge, has never before been held by a Hull lodge, nor has it returned to our Province since 2017. To bring it home on our very first attempt only deepens the pride we carry.

Yet beyond cups, titles, and accolades, the evening was defined by something far greater: brotherhood, adventure, and shared experience.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Universities Chapter Yorkshire No. 4047 for their outstanding hospitality. Their warmth and sincerity made the evening not merely memorable, but meaningful. We offer them an open invitation to visit Juno Lodge, and we hope this marks the beginning of a strong and enduring bond between our two Masonic homes.

A journey well undertaken.

A cup well claimed.

And perhaps, the first chapter in a much larger story of friendship across the Province.
