Description
A Rare Masonic Event Returns: The Ceremony of the Veils
We are pleased to announce that the Ceremony of the Veils will be performed at Castlegate House, York, on Monday 9th June, beginning promptly at 6.45pm. This rare and historic ritual will be conducted by the Provincial Grand Stewards Chapter No. 9611, following their Installation earlier that evening.
The Ceremony of the Veils is steeped in rich symbolism and is rarely seen outside of Bristol. In fact, it may only be performed every two years, and this will be the first time it has taken place in our Province since 2018.
This remarkable ceremony dates back to the 18th century and reflects the ancient traditions of Royal Arch Masonry. Once a standard part of Masonic progression, it involves the candidate’s symbolic journey through four veils—Blue, Purple, Crimson, and White—each representing key virtues and scriptural elements, leading to greater enlightenment.
The ritual, once commonly worked across England, was formally discontinued in 1817 except under strict regulation. Today, it survives mostly as a demonstration—making this a unique and privileged opportunity for Royal Arch Companions to witness a vivid part of our shared Masonic heritage. We strongly encourage Companions across the Province to attend and take part in this exceptional occasion.
Venue: Castlegate House, York
Date: Monday 9th June
Time: 6.45pm start (Installation of Chapter 9611 followed by the Ceremony)
