When William Glanville (Deputy Provincial Grand Master) and Master of Wilberforce Lodge attended the Lord Mayor's dinner in Beverley in October 2024, the Cherry Youth Group was highlighted.
The club is aimed at young people aged 9 – 18 living in Beverley giving them an opportunity to develop skills and keep them off the streets in this deprived area of the town. It also operates in the school holidays. It has been in operation for 5 years at Mudhills Park Beverley. They previously had no building to meet in, meeting in a field, and if needed gazebos were erected. Television's "DIY SOS" became involved and they now have a purpose-built youth centre due to the generosity of the community and companies of Beverley. They now have a safe and warm building to continue and develop their vital support and work with the community children.
Following the Lord Mayor's dinner a number of generous Masonic donations arose. Wilberforce Lodge and Chapter gave £100.00 each, Ridings Tablers Lodge and Chapter gave £100.00 each, Constitutional Lodge and Chapter gave £100.00 each and Beverlonian Lodge gave £300.00, a total of £1000.00. The information was passed to me (Alan Allinson) to arrange and co-ordinate the details and donation. The donation was used for 3 play stations and one game for each.
I then applied to the FCYNER for match funding which was successful at £1000.00. The funds went towards a whole new batch of arts and crafts. They use sewing kits, air drying dough, make your own key rings, bracelets and coaster sets, jewellery and friendship makings sets. They bought fabric, pen sets, T shirts and baseball hats. All of the arts and crafts sessions allow them to sit and talk while engaging in mindful activities. They renewed the outdoor sports equipment, football goal, new footballs, team bibs, cones and a football pump. They also bought a new badminton set and some stomp rockets as well as an archery set.
We have made a real difference to this vital Group.
