According to Ancient Greek mythology the phoenix is a bird that is reborn after death, rising from its own ashes. Unsurprisingly it has come to represent resurrection and rebirth, and several masonic Lodges have borne the name ‘Phoenix’. It was very apt that on Saturday, 8th February 2025 the Phoenix Lodge, No. 9963 as well as its installation meeting went through its own rebirth through a relaunch with a new theme and purpose.
The lodge has been relaunched as a special interest lodge with a shared appreciation and interest in craft beer and real ale, making the lodge more vibrant and rewarding to members and partners.
The Lodge was on honoured to receive W. Bro Tony Randle PPGMO, the Provincial Senior Grand Warden Designate, representing the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master on this occasion supported by his Director of Ceremonies, W. Bro Anthony Durham ProvGStwd who was diligent in his duties.
It was a humble and jovial ceremony supported by visitors from various local lodges as well as from across the country. Amongst those present was W. Bro Mark Iveson APGM as well as W. Bro William Glanville DepPGM who also became a joining member with three others. W. Bro Alex McCallum PPJGD was installed in the Chair of King Solomon by W. Bro James Steele PPSGD, who acted as Master following the sad resignation of the Lodges Master due to personal reasons, with the Installing Director of Ceremonies, W. Bro Ben Rose PPSGW, ensuring the day ran smoothly.
Following the formalities the Festive Board was a celebration of the new lodge format and purpose. Sixty were in attendance who enjoyed a buffet after which Phoenix Brewery delivered an engaging presentation on their history and operations, followed by an excellent beer tasting session featuring a variety of their finest brews.
The Installations of Phoenix Lodge of Hull, No. 368, the current lodges predecessor, had a reputation in the Province in the early 19th Century for being both fun and vibrant. There was a fun and friendly atmosphere at the Lodges recent Installation, with much camaraderie and banter, channelling that same energy, which was a pleasure.
With renewed enthusiasm and purpose the future of Phoenix Lodge No. 9963 is looking bright… cheers!
