Members of Phoenix Lodge No. 9963, under the leadership of their Worshipful Master, W. Bro Paul Hillary, together with family, friends and guests, enjoyed a memorable Oktoberfest-themed White Table event following the Lodge's September meeting in Beverley.
The afternoon combined fellowship, friendship, history, superb food, fine beer, and charitable giving, creating a truly enjoyable occasion for everyone in attendance. Guests were treated to a short presentation on the history and origins of Oktoberfest, discovering how the world-famous Bavarian festival began in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Bavarian royalty, with horse racing forming part of the original festivities. This proved a fitting introduction to the afternoon's entertainment.
A particular highlight of the event was the Bavarian-themed buffet prepared by W. Bro Tim Brooksbank. The quality, variety and presentation of the food received widespread praise from all in attendance and perfectly complemented the selection of German beers available for tasting throughout the afternoon. The Lodge was also delighted to welcome back V W. Bro Bill Glanville and his good lady Julie. Their presence was warmly received by members and guests alike, and it was a pleasure to see them enjoying the fellowship and festivities of the day.
In keeping with the origins of Oktoberfest, everyone took part in a lively charity horse-racing event. Six races featuring an array of colourful runners provided plenty of excitement, laughter and friendly competition.
The races were generously sponsored by local businesses and supporters of the Lodge. These included The One Point, Vault Tech Solutions, GT Electrical Domestic Appliances, Smart Power Electrical, Williamsons Solicitors & DJ Starkey.
Following each race, the sponsor was invited forward and presented with a bottle of German beer by the WM Paul Hillary, in recognition of their generous support. These presentations added to the fun and convivial atmosphere that characterised the entire afternoon.
The racing itself proved hugely entertaining, with members and guests enthusiastically backing their chosen horses and cheering them home. Friendly rivalry, good humour and plenty of laughter ensured that every race was keenly contested.
The event was held in support of Zarach, the children's charity dedicated to helping families living in poverty by providing essential items such as beds and bedding, giving children the opportunity to engage fully in education. Thanks to the generosity of those attending, the charity horse racing, together with additional beer sales during the afternoon, raised an impressive £675 for Zarach. This excellent total demonstrated the generosity of members, guests, sponsors and supporters alike, ensuring that the day's enjoyment also delivered meaningful support to a worthy cause.
Special thanks were also expressed to W. Bro James Steele, his daughter Emilia, Bro. Kieran Rose-Newton and also W. Bro Alistair McIntyre of City of Lancaster Lodge, whose hard work behind the scenes was instrumental in making the event such a success. From planning and preparation to coordinating the various activities throughout the afternoon, their efforts ensured that everything came together seamlessly. Appreciation was also extended to the Lodge's DC W. Bro Andy Hinchcliff, whose professionalism and organisation kept the event running smoothly from start to finish, allowing members and guests alike to relax and enjoy the festivities.
Phoenix Lodge extends sincere thanks to everyone involved in the organisation of the event, to the race sponsors for their generous support, and to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of the day. The combination of enjoyment and fundraising ensured that the Lodge's Oktoberfest celebration was not only tremendous fun but also made a valuable contribution to the work of Zarach. With £675 raised for the Charity, excellent food, outstanding fellowship and plenty of laughter, the Phoenix Lodge Oktoberfest proved to be a tremendous success and a wonderful example of Freemasonry's commitment to friendship, enjoyment and charitable giving.
