W Bro Malcolm Burton is celebrating 60 years in Freemasonry, receiving his long service certificate from AProvGM Martin Eggermont on 25 March 2026 at Elmslac Lodge.
Malcolm was born in Redcar and educated at Coatham Grammar School. In 1955 directly after leaving school he followed his father into Redcar Steelworks qualifying with a HND at the now Teesside University. Future qualifications included becoming a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, C Eng., M. I. Mech. E., whilst a Principal Industrial Mentor of the Inst of Mech Engineers and his career was all engineering with one of his proudest work moments as a member of the Assoc of Iron and Steel Engineers to visit Pittsburgh, USA to present a technical paper. He earned a well-earned retirement in 1992.
He was initiated into De Brus Lodge on 14 December 1965 and was WM in 1977/8. He joined Roseberry Lodge of Installed Masters in 1978 receiving Provincial honours in 1994 as PPJGW. He resigned RLIM membership in 2022 on their move to Saltburn but joined Elmslac Lodge in 2009.
Exalted Redcar Chapter 8.9.1970 and MEZ 1983/4 he was made an Honorary member in January this year. In 1994 Malcolm was a Founder member of Roseberry Chapter of Installed Principals and remains a welcome attendee at every meeting.
For many years Malcolm was on the masonic lecture circuit and was always welcomed by lodges and chapters as his lectures were always interesting with comedic intercepts and well researched facts being divulged. He managed over 50 such lectures throughout the Province. His best guess is that in his 60 years he has attended 84 Provincial meetings including the sojourn of 6 PGMβs, 200 Ladies evenings, 200 bbqβs, Sunday lunches and socials, 50 visits as a Chapter Rep and 50 years as a Secretary or Scribe E. Freemasonry has given him lots of joy and lots of laughs!
