On Sunday 25th August, a group of Freemasons from various Lodges around the Province, together with their partners, took part in a guided walk around York city centre, organised by Bro. David Grainger, a member of Francis Drake Lodge. The tour began at Castlegate House, which provided an excellent starting point to learn about some of the buildings in York, and also where the Lodge Room was also open for viewing, which many people found fascinating!
The walk then progressed through York, with a stop outside the Merchant Adventurers Hall, where photos could be taken, and a little more history explained about the area, and it’s Masonic connections.
Sally Dorée, from the Zetland Ladies’ Club said: “I had no idea how many links there were with Freemasonry within the city of York! It’s fascinating!”
David was ably assisted by his wife Claire, who was a fountain of knowledge regarding the history of York.
The walk also included a tour of York Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York, which again was fascinating, and gave a real insight into times gone by. The tour ended with a well-earned rest and refreshment, where a raffle was held, and £60.00 was raised for the York Rescue Boat Charity. An excellent day out, and meeting with friends both old and new.
