Recently Alcuin Lodge took a stall at a local car boot sale to raise funds to support one of its chosen charities (LIAM - Laughter Inspiration Art Music), which was set up by the parents of Liam who tragically passed away in 2016 and the age of 20. The charity provides grants to underprivileged young people who want to pursue higher education in arts and musical disciplines. The Lodge asked its members to find items they might have otherwise donated to a charity shop or had just been stored and unlikely ever to be used again and possibly even disposed of, and to bring them to an arranged car boot sale. The event raised £235 towards the charity, which was gratefully received, and all the members and their friends and family who helped out had an enjoyable time talking to the people who visited their stall. Whilst this is clearly an effective and sustainable way to raise funds, as an alternative to always asking members to put their hands in their pocket, it is also an effective form of community engagement and an important opportunity to promote the charitable work of your Lodge. Off the success of this event, the Lodge plans to attend more car boot sales over the summer. This seems like a great way to clear any clutter from your homes whilst raising valuable funds, and who knows, you may discover a hidden treasure worth a fortune - why not give it a try?
